Monk' (Parisian Beatsmyth)

Thought I'd knock up a quick post, Guys Music is right up My Alley. Enjoy!

This is not an EP or LP, it's a beat tape made of raw Hip Hop/Future Funk beats or whatever you can call this. This reflects what I felt like doing these last few months, didn't feel like sampling so much..Hope you'll enjoy it and spread the word !

released 12 August 2012
All tracks Produced by Monk'
Cover Arts by Ano (anokreyol@gmail.com

Monk' delves into the intoxicating sphere of electronics, which has
recently culminated into the Truman Shuzz EP. This talented Parisian
continues the West Coast tradition that we have grown to be very fond of, uniquely channelling atmospheric boogie-synths and swingin’ rhythmic beats, resulting in a distinct sound that is predominant in his first beat tape - which says it like it is : “Raw Futuristics (monkbeats.bandcamp.com/album/raw-futuristics).

We were hooked, and impressed, at his stunning narrative through electronic mutations. Amidst the rawness of his production, a nostalgic wave of warmth tides over each track. Exuding a melancholic charm, “Truman Shuzz” is a display of mature introspection - less forlorn, a lot more edge. Its startling how something simple can stir such compelling emotions in a listener.

We champion this optimism through adversity, it stimulates the movement of funk – it unfolds a story, and here we present to you Monk’s first chapter with Darker Than Wax.

D.A.C Beats (2k13) Summer Light EP

The second Brazilian on the DarkerThanWax signing comes in the form of Deryck Alonso Cabrera also know as D.A.C Beats. Growing up on a strict diet of West Coast G-funk and the like, this young one has got FUNK etched all over him. From "Old English" to "Rolling, Rolling, Rolling", he carries on the tradition strongly, while injecting his own swing and language.
But what hits us most is that certain 'spareness' which he maintains, allowing his tracks to breathe and exude that raw vibe.

B 3 N B i (sept. 2k13) You, Yourself

Back in March of 2013 I went to the Beat Swap Meet in Phoenix, AZ. I offered the bored DJ a $20 bill (that I borrowed) to buy his entire box of 45s.

The "[ -- ]" are the way they were named in my MPC. They were numbered in the order I made them.

There's no real concept to this album, but its a glimpse into the kind of beats that don't take too long to put together but make my day so much brighter after coming home from a long day at my cubicle day job. These are the beats we wake up for, and ones that give us sleepless nights. No pre-determined notion of what they can or should be. No indication or expectation for who will listen to them. Just pure honest raw beats. I hope you enjoy the sounds, and thank you for listening.

Gummy Soul (2k130 93 Still (Souls of Mischief | 93 til' Infinity Remixes 1st Time Ever)

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of 93 'Til Infinity, Souls of Mischief graciously opened their vaults to give Gummy Soul the exclusive acapellas of their classic album, to remix for the first time ever.

https://www.facebook.com/gummysoul

As the framework of the project, Gummy Soul’s Wally Clark, dug through his extensive record collection, and gathered all of the songs that were sampled to make hip-hop in 1993. Jazz, Funk and Soul songs, used to create classics from Digable Planets, Snoop Dogg and Black Moon, were then re-contextualized to provide familiar, yet updated versions of some of hip-hop’s most beloved material.

"I wanted to take all of the records that people used back then, and create new compositions using the same techniques they were using – such as filtered bass lines, classic drum breaks, echo-y horns – to make an album that sounds like it could have been released in 1993," says Clark. "It was an amazing exercise trying to capture the essence of a sacred time in hip-hop. It also allowed me to playfully use samples that are normally deemed off-limits, because they are too well known."

Be on the look out for Soul's of Mischief's new album "There Is Only Now," produced by Adrian Younge, as well as the 93 'Til documentary, featuring Questlove, Mos Def, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock and more.

Somepling (2k13) Finally Lost

Consider this short album as an experiment.
After the two "self-released" vinyl projects i did this year, i wanted to escape...
Just try new things, work freely without restrictions.
I truly think the MPC sampler is "Only Built For Escaping".

It's not about the trip or the destination, it's about getting lost...
"Finally Lost".

-Somepling

...............................................................................

"Finally Lost".

An El Paso, texan Resident . . . . 17yrs old.

Much like the car the album is named after, this tape is short, rough, and unpolished, but it gets the job done. This album is made up of demos that I've made over the past few months that were actually listenable. I planned to make it this nice big album, but what the hell, this is good enough. I like it.

P.S. If you can name all the (main) samples used in this EP, you'll get an internet high-five because I've lost the original artwork I was originally going to give out. Sorry.

DarkerThanWax: NegiumBeats (2k13) Sweet Life

NEGUIMBEATS - SWEET LIFE EP
CAT NO : DTW 22

NeguimBeats is the latest contribution to the constant paradigm shifts in the movement of Brazil – though "Sweet Life" is devoid of the booming favela funk influence, especially pivotal in the current wave of electronic music. In place is a palatial sonic platter of impeccable arrangements. Typical sounds are tastefully woven together, resulting in an incredibly emotive and ambient soundscape. Shaking off expectations of the tropical, South American percussion based samples, he tastefully relives the omnipresent nostalgia of jazz - blithe stabs of keys and notes resonating with earthy, full-bodied snares, as he does in "Smooth Ambient" and "Life in Abundance". Everything falls into its right place as "Jazz" (featuring Kolombiano) hits the cans, with flowing anamorphic sounds and melancholic reverb of piano keys, exuding a keen sense of longing, ending with the illuminating "Space Traveller", capturing the calming, cosmic ambience. Neguim Beats evokes an innate connection with the listener, fast becoming an anomaly in the relationship between artistes and fans – a vital connection we thrive on at DTW.

14KT (Aug. 2013) Nickel'N'Dimed

14KT laces together 14 instrumentals + 1 song with an incomparable ear for flipping samples, and his signature boom-bap, off-kilter drum programming and spacey synths. Then he enlists a handful of his favorite artists for a vocal encore (including Blu, Black Milk and MED) + appearances by Detroit's own JMSN on the summer cruiser Slo Swerve (also featuring Jamall Bufford) and Cali's Kokane (along with MED) on the new west coast anthem "W.C.E.F." 14KT even steps up to the microphone himself on "Five & Ten" to paint a picture of his take on the phrase, “Nickel & Dimed."

Kendall Tucker, aka 14KT, 1/7 of Michigan’s mighty hip-hop group Athletic Mic League, released his debut solo LP "The Golden Hour [Soundtrack]" in 2008 after a rich history with AML. Despite being an instrumental album, The Golden Hour appeared on many year-end “top albums” lists. Okayplayer said “this is the sort of striking project that can single-handedly create an artists following.” And so it did.
14KT has since released four solo albums, and is preparing his new instrumental album "Nickel & Dimed" for an August 27th release on Mello Music Group. From the lean soaked swerve to flamboyant west coast Errol Flynnin', the soulful synths and hard hitting drums drive KT's most eclectic project to date.

Oh-No (2013) vs. Now-Again Two

OhNo
(copied from Webpage) Oh No’s debut album for Now-Again Records was also the first in Now-Again’s “music library” series, one of the label’s most successful exercises in creating modern “library music” for easy synchronization for film and TV. It also stood alone as an instrumental album for this lauded producer.

For this entry, the seventh Now-Again Music Library, Oh No combs through a now-much-more-vast catalog from American soul, funk and jazz to Iranian folk to Zambian hard rock. Fans of the variety of projects that Oh No is a part – from his Gangrene project with Alchemist to his production for the likes of Talib Kweli and Danny Brown – will be pleased with the variety of beats contained within.

This album is 19 tracks, running 40 minutes. As with all of Now-Again’s library releases, comes as a limited edition is CD is packaged in a “mini-LP” thick cardboard “tip-on” sleeve and is only available digitally at Now-Again’s subscription service at http://drip.fm/nowagain

Egadz . . . . . . Electronica | Synthesis | Beats (August 2013)

Multi-instrumentalist Erik Nava is an electronic musician raised in Southern California. Beat making came quickly for him after various forms of hip hop expression. In 2001, Erik fully realized the ideas that broke away from traditional loop and sample based beat music. The idea 12 years ago was to take things a bit further: to make beats into real composed music by utilizing live instruments played by himself. In essence, making beat music that was more than something to layer vocals over. Erik made beats music that stood on its own.

A big believer in crafting an original sound, Erik built song after song, album after album, based on the belief that one day it could be a genre. Unfortunately, the industry hadn’t carved out a niche for this new kind of music in Erik’s early years, so he continued to release the music independently, while slowly roping in fans worldwide. Experimenting and pushing the envelope on what post-hip hop electronica would sound like became an obsession. Soon Erik found himself supporting his own endeavors as a professional musician, still completely independent.

The Mancunian Candidate: Mecca:83

Bandcamp Link (Support)

I feel blessed to be able to listen to such Dream-masonry, Soundscapin' & Skewcarvin'. The blatant Melodic & harmonious Manipulation must be placed on a pedestal & as of this precise moment I'm Hard pressed between Afta-1, BMB Spacekid & This Manchester Resident; namely Mecca:83 as to whom I like most!

The names listed are for me (bar Afta-1, don't believe his involved in the scene like he was) the best in Hip-Hop production as I write. Flawless, Sound Quality, the ability to create from scratch (that means no samplin', I innerstand that hip-Hop was built from samples, but that clichéd saying has absolutely no relevance anymore, this ain't 1991), The ability to blend synthesis and samples (many try and fail miserably) and regardless of My particulars . . . . . . Just Sculpting this vibe, this sound . . . . Beautiful noise.

His Latest Work

Huh, What & Where Recordings (Everythings free on 22.08.2013)

This is a label started by friends out of a college dorm.
Created by artists for artists, this isn’t too deep.
Our only goal is to share with you the things that move/inspire us.
Founded by Killa out of his college apartment known today as 44, Keith saw the seeds planted early. During an internship at age 22 with Stones Throw, two events shaped his outlook; hearing fellow intern Flylo’s old jams and experiencing the death of his hero Jaydee. Soon after immersing himself in the beatmusic coming out LA, he realized his own music was potentially garbage. Saddened and slightly depressed, he grew inspired from the emergence of collectives such as My Hollow Drum, Wedidit, CMLK, etc…and decided “fuck it.”
He threw down all the change in his piggy bank and through deliberate bribery/larceny and a series of elaborate hoaxes/cons he managed to enlist the aid of those represented in our artist roster. Others say he simply blew into his longhorn and they emerged one by one, from out of the forest, all except for Juj, who flew in from the sky and somehow submerged from the water. His only goal, if any, was to create opportunities for his friends to enjoy their little silly, childlike pursuits…all the the meanwhile completely abandoning ship to go off and work at his fancy new job with the Portland Trailblazers. Leaving a lot of the decision making up to two of the most infantile members of the crew, we still don’t know how this all came together. Ask top to bottom, nobody directly involved in this knows exactly how any of this shit happened.

The focus obviously was and could only be the music, but what existed now, in essence indirectly as a result of constant collaborations & ideas bouncing between friends was this random grouping of talent and a motherfucking chance to save lives. The backbone to all this was the assurance between them that the focus could never be the money, not because they don’t like money, but because its not really the hip thing anymore, ya know? Young 20-somethings take on women, life, & feeling (or lack thereof). With no real plan, these clueless assholes ventured out into the sunset together and what you are witnessing now is their incredible journey. This is something remarkable, truly life-altering, poetic & original to be cherished and celebrated for generations to come…
Thanks to Lil B, God, Skateboarding, Women, Drough, Vinyl, Guns, Magazines, Jaydee, Sports, Teachers & our families.
It’s important to note that none of this could’ve been possible without the countless involved, especially you.
